2009 Soapbox Derby

This event happened a while ago but we've had so much going on here in Portland that there was no time to post it. So here we have a report from the 2009 soapbaox derby! This is an event which takes place on beautiful Mt. Tabor Park and lots of people gather to watch cars go down the hill without engines. We had to park far away and climb the hill. The above picture shows three-to-a-stroller-action. Below we see the Vining sisters and Miki lounging in our hillside picnic spot while the men do all the work:

Elsie joined in with the kids sliding down the grassy hill. Later we wondered how she got grass in her underwear, but then we remembered!

Pete and Ida were unimpressed.

Can you find Elsie in this picture of hip Portland scensters?

This contest is taken seriously by everyone involved. Below are some pictures of the cars which sped down the hill and a few of them lost control and crashed into the bystanders. That's why we sat up on that grassy knoll.

Some of the cars weren't so serious. Here's something made out of three barrels:

And here's a lego themed car and whoa, the drivers are chugging brewskis before their run! They didn't crash which was lucky because that would've killed Elsie and Ida's buzz right there.

Dude, I totally remember this! Except we forgot to take any brews and the funnelers wouldn't share. Also, you should have captured that crash where the onlooker got a broken nose!

Judging by the number of coolers in backgrounds, this has the appearance of one giant excuse to drink.

Why doesn't Pete shave?

When is Arthur and Pete's naked tour of Portland (The Movie) coming out on DVD?

Arthur's first published piece of writing was on the subject of demolition derbies. This seems to be a lingering interest even when he is all grown up with 2 little girls in tow.
But I must say all the different cars looked totally cool.
