Back at home

This morning we went to Brooklyn Hospital to meet Elsie's doctor, Dr. Aijl. This was exciting because we got to use the car seat which was lent to us by Elsie's cousin Thomas. He's a year old now and has outgrown it. Elsie was so small her little arms barely made it around the straps, plus we had her bundled up pretty well. We snapped the seat into the car a drove off to Fort Greene where everyone who saw Elsie said, "oh look!" I guess it's not often you see a three day old baby in public. Here she is bundled up in the car seat before we left. We placed her in the sun to help with the jaundice although later the doctor said this doesn't really make a difference.



Doctor Aijl was very nice and weighed Elsie who had lost half a pound. This alarmed us until we heard it was normal. Then he said she looked pretty yellow so they'd have to draw blood to test for the billirubin again. A nurse stuck a needle in Elsie's tiny vein but she (elsie) didn't seem to mind. Maggie did though. She couldn't watch it. The blood test showed an increase in billirubin, but not enough to warrant sticking Elsie under UV lamps (that's what they do if it gets too high). We have to return tomorrow to check the blood again though. We're watching for jaundice now and Maggie's feeding away to put some more ounces on our little six pounder. Big Kath came by with groceries and some cream for maggie's boobs. Grandma Vining made us some delicious roasted red peppers. We've got loadsof cuddly hand-me-downs. It sure is nice to have family around!
